BLOWN AWAY!

The combination of dance, music, comedy, story of love along with great set design and transformation was fabulous. Sara Esty who has a lead role as Lise is both graceful and energising ultimately stealing the show with her talent for both ballet and singing. The big tap-dancing scene done by the three male leads along with a full stage of dancers exceeded my expectations. We had Orchestral Terrace seats that were optimal for viewing the entire stage. I loved it so much I would go again!

One of the best shows I have seen recently at PPAC. The dancing is unbelievable. Don't know how they do two of these shows in one day on the weekend. It has to be exhausting. The singing was also very enjoyable and the scenery was beautiful. Fabulous cast, great job. Totally recommend this show.

BEST THING I’VE SEEN AT PHOENIX THEATER

I saw the matinee this afternoon and was transfixed by every performance and the talent and versatility of all the actors/dancers in the play. The two leads were incredible, as were the actors that played Milo and Henri. Every supporting part was so professional and enjoyable I couldn’t believe the quality of the work. I came home and watched the 1951 movie with Gene Kelly. I don’t know who wrote this new adaptation… Whether it followed more closely the play that was done in London… But I liked the story I saw today better than the 1951 movie. Go and see this before it leaves town… And then say it again

INNOVATIVE SET DESIGN!

Favorite singer was Nick Spangler at Henri ..I didnt feel the chemistry from Garen Scribner, . Best, most dynamic singing was when 3 male leads sang together. Loved the set designs , the flow and movement of sets added energy to the whole play.

STUNNING AND UNFORGETABLE

This was a graduation present for a young man who loves Jazz, Gershwin, and great theater. All of us were enchanted. We watched the 1951 movie a few weeks ago and agreed that the changes in tone, script and the addition of more music suited modern taste. The best comment on the performance came from the young man: "It was so clear that they set out to create art." Amen to that.

TRANSPORTED

Might have been politely sitting throughout the show but every inch of my being was pulled into this performance. Ballet and Broadway had a love child and called it "An American In Paris"...what a blessing! Prepare to swoon, float, fall in love and still be singing the songs the next day. I wanted to shout, "Encore!" I wanted Instant Replay. No wonder there was a spontaneous standing O!!!

WANTED TO SEE MORE SET DESIGN OF MAGNIFICENT PARIS!

I couldn't wait to take my Grand Daughter Avery to see this magical performance of a classic play for her very speciai 13th birthday present. I had built up the evening by taking her to a French dinner, French motif birthday presents in a French tote bag...and then the actual performance with live orchestra (she was impressed). The voices and dancing were amazing. Like other reviews, I didn't feel the chemistry between Jerry & Lise, but what I missed most was beautiful background historical landmarks of Paris actually staying in the scenes, tree lined streets, metro kiosks, bridges with those beautiful streetlights over the Seine, etc. to help us feel we were there. I too, wondered about the "love connection" and how it happened with Jerry & Lise--needed to be a little more overt so audience could really feel it.. Being a "Francophile" my expectations were probably on the higher side.

LOTS TO LIKE, BAD FIT FOR ME

I went into the show knowing nothing about it, but it turns out I knew many of the songs. The costumes, set, and choreography were beautiful. I have very little experience with ballet and had trouble appreciating the dancing elements (not my cup of tea). However, my main issues with the play were some of the characters themselves. Lise was very dour and cold. It was hard to understand why anyone but Henry had much interest in her. Henry was a fun character, but the play constantly toyed with the idea that he might be homosexual, then never went anywhere with it. I didn't really get the interest between Lise and Jerry/Adam...either it wasn't built up enough, or I just missed something. I'm willing to bet that a lot of the relationship building was through the ballet portions. While I didn't enjoy it as much as other plays, I still enjoyed it, and you probably will too.

MISSING THE MUSIC

I was very excited about seeing An American in Paris but immediately was saddened to see the small size of the orchestra. Many of the orchestrations felt too thin,. When you are presenting such well known pieces, the audience comes with an aural history and that was disappointing. The sets were amazing, the company wonderful but I felt the leads were lacking chemistry. There did not seem to be any genuine affection between the two leads. It was impressive how competently the leads sang. A good evening but my expectations were higher based on the New York production.

AMAZING SET / MEDIOCRE PERFORMANCE

We were very excited to see the performance (12/9) but left the theater disappointed. The Opera House is a beautiful facility and the set design and scene transitions were fixating. Unfortunately the acting didn't live up to the set or the wonderful score. The leads, Jerry and Lise, shared absolutely no chemistry. Lise was devoid of emotion and Jerry struggled to show any real interest in Lise or a "relationship". The characters of Andy, Henri and Milo were terrific - nicely acted with strong vocals. It amounted to a nice evening out, albeit not very memorable.

NOT PLEASED

We were so excited to see that American in Paris was part of the Mirvish package for this year. However the singing, the orchestra and the dancing left us cold. This is some of the most beautiful music ever written for a movie/play and it just fell flat for us. The dancing was beautiful, but disappointed that it was mostly ballet. We attended the Sunday matinee on a very stormy day. The seats as always were good, and comfortable.
